Aveda Color Conserve is back — and this time it is a salon-exclusive line. If you already know Color Control, the obvious question is: what is actually different?
The simple answer is that both lines clean colour-treated hair and both are designed to help protect colour. For their shampoo-and-conditioner systems, Aveda cites up to 8 weeks of colour protection under its testing conditions. So this is not a case of “one protects colour and the other does not.”
The real choice comes down to four things: how each formula emphasizes fade protection, the aroma, the lather experience, and whether you want one simple formula or a Light/Rich system tailored more closely to hair type.
First: what do Color Conserve and Color Control have in common?
Both are made for colour-treated hair. Both cleanse. Both condition. Both are built to help reduce the loss of salon-fresh colour over time.
And importantly, Aveda does not publish a head-to-head test showing that one of these two shampoo-and-conditioner systems protects colour better than the other. If someone tells you one is automatically the “stronger” colour protector, that goes beyond what Aveda currently publishes.
Difference #1: they emphasize different ways of fighting fade
Color Conserve: remove what can make colour look dull
Aveda’s professional education for the returned Color Conserve line emphasizes a fade-fighting botanical cleansing system that gently cleanses while helping remove colour-dulling impurities such as minerals and metals. The formula also uses bio-fermented lactic acid to help smooth and seal the cuticle.
In practical terms, Color Conserve is designed not only to avoid stripping colour, but also to help keep colour looking clearer and less dulled by deposits that can accumulate on the hair.
Color Control: reduce water-driven colour washout
Color Control puts more emphasis on what happens every time coloured hair gets wet. Aveda describes naturally derived “magnets” that help neutralize colour-dulling particles, together with dual-charged molecules that create a protective shield to help keep water from penetrating the hair and reduce colour washout.
These are different technical emphases, not mutually exclusive jobs. Both lines clean and protect colour; they simply highlight different parts of the fade problem.
Difference #2: the aromas are clearly different
This may be the easiest difference to decide in person.
- Color Conserve: an aroma profile featuring lavender, geranium and grapefruit — fresh, botanical and citrus-leaning.
- Color Control: an aroma profile featuring osmanthus, orange, cypress and cedarwood — floral-citrus with a more woody direction.
If fragrance matters to you, there is no need to overthink the chemistry. Come into the salon and smell both. You may know your answer immediately.
Difference #3: Color Conserve is the high-foam option
Aveda specifically describes Color Conserve shampoo as cleansing with a high-foam lather. That is a deliberate part of the returned line’s experience.
We would not call Color Control “low-foam,” because Aveda does not describe it that way. The accurate distinction is simpler: if you enjoy a richer, more abundant lather, Color Conserve is the line Aveda explicitly designed and markets for that experience.
Difference #4: one formula vs Light/Rich customization
This is probably the most practical difference when choosing between the two lines.
Color Conserve keeps the choice simple
The returned Color Conserve shampoo comes as one formula. There is no Light and Rich split.
If your hair does not sit clearly at one extreme — very fine and easily weighed down, or noticeably thick and wanting richer conditioning — and you simply want a straightforward colour-care shampoo, Color Conserve makes the decision easy.
Color Control gives you more control over weight and richness
- Color Control Light: specifically positioned for fine-to-medium hair, with an airy, weightless feel.
- Color Control Rich: positioned for medium-to-thick hair, with a richer conditioning direction.
So why does Color Control still need Light and Rich if Color Conserve has only one shampoo? Because the advantage of Color Control is not that it is automatically “better” — it is that you can tune the system more precisely to how much weight and conditioning your hair likes.
Color Conserve = simplicity.
Color Control = customization.
Bonus difference: Color Control has Light and Rich leave-in treatments
Color Control also extends beyond shampoo and conditioner with Leave-In Treatment Light and Leave-In Treatment Rich. These add another layer of protection for guests who want more than wash-day colour care.
Aveda highlights:
- protection against water-related colour fade;
- heat protection up to 450°F / 232°C;
- help protecting hair from the drying effects of the sun with a naturally derived UV filter;
- and up to 12 weeks of colour vibrancy under the leave-in products’ separate testing conditions.
That 12-week claim uses a different test from the 8-week shampoo-and-conditioner claim, so the two numbers should not be treated as a direct comparison.
So which one should you choose?
- You want a simple colour-care choice, a high-foam lather and the lavender/geranium/grapefruit aroma: start with Color Conserve.
- Your hair is fine-to-medium and products can weigh it down: look at Color Control Light.
- Your hair is medium-to-thick and you prefer a richer conditioning feel: look at Color Control Rich.
- You heat-style frequently or want additional water/heat/UV protection: consider adding the appropriate Color Control Leave-In Treatment.
- You are not sure: that is exactly where an in-salon comparison helps. We can look at your hair, talk about how it behaves after washing and styling, and let you compare the aromas in person.
